I honestly don't know which is worse, the murder, the coverup to get welfare and food stamps....which didn't go to feeding the children, or a grandmother helping in it all.

Parents charged in death of boy they tried to cremate in grill
Detroit couple also accused of welfare fraud
By BEN SCHMITT . FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER . March 19, 2008

The parents of a 2-year-old boy whose remains were found in a basement
ceiling in Detroit last year were charged today with first-degree murder and
welfare fraud.

Nickella Reid, 24, and Joseph Miller, 28, both of Detroit, are charged
with first-degree murder in the death of Deuntay Miller, who died nearly two
years ago in his parents' care. Reid and Miller told police that they tried
to cremate Deuntay in a barbecue grill to avoid funeral costs.

The remains were discovered in November as Detroit police investigated burn
injuries to a 1-year-old boy, who police said is Deuntay's brother.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy also announced welfare fraud charges
which stem from Reid allegedly collecting welfare and food stamps in the
name of Deuntay after the boy died.

Worthy said the exact cause of Deuntay's death is unknown, but autopsy
results indicated he suffered from malnutrition and had several broken
bones, healed and unhealed.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Jerry Dorsey, who heads the child and
family abuse unit, said Deuntay had been dead for a period ranging from 9
months to a year.

Additionally, Worthy charged Reid's mother, Doretha Lippett, 51, of Detroit
with two counts of welfare fraud for her role in allegedly assisting her
daughter in collecting the money.

"It is very difficult to think of an innocent child suffering so profoundly
during his two years on Earth," Worthy said.

All three suspects are expected to be arraigned today in 36th District
Court.

Overdose 'em.

Cremate THEIR ass.

Dump the ashes in the landfill.

Never mention their names again.

I'm sorry, but I don't see what purpose is served by stories like this, or the story about the lady who sat on a toilet seat for two years. Things like that don't represent the behavior of normal people, and while it might be nice to be smug and think "I would never do a thing like that," I don't think it contributes anything either to DF or to an ongoing political dialogue.

If the stories had either relevance or humor, it might be different, but things like this are about as enlightening as the latest about Britney Spears.

I'm sorry if I come off as a grouch about this, but that's the way I feel about this kind of stuff.

Cronic, if you'd read any of my posts, you'd know that I don't go for the cutesy stuff. But if I want the National Enquirer, I'd buy it.

Buck.. I have read your posts.. you know I have.. not going for the cutesy stuff is fine also.. But what does that have to do with what cobra or I said?

You opened the thread.. you read it obviously.. and all you did was stress your opinion about how these types of stories serve no purpose for DF because they don't represent the behavior of normal people.

Well, maybe not in your mind, but BucK Laser isn't the only member here.. maybe others would care to debate the subject is all I'm trying to say Buck...

Maybe people would rather debate issues like this rather then debate who is gonna be the next president.

I myself don't get interested in every single topic here at DF.. thats the reason for different subjects and areas to post and debate in.

Nothing personal...Thats the only point I'm trying to make here.. I hope you don't feel hurt or pissed off like PH gets..

Buck, I posted it, as it's big news around where I live. I also posted it because not only was it a senseless death, but the welfare fraud and the grandmother's help to me made it more of a story than the ones that we are sadly getting used to.

Sometimes I really think there is a call for involuntary sterilization.

Well, they are just like the <insert muslim/iranian/iraqi/communist/terrorist here> stories. It's just there to make you shocked at the extremes of humanity.

Emotionally, I agree, but alas, then we are just like them, like the barbaric nations, and all that.

I do go along with Pookie's post. Involuntary sterilization and a prohibition against adoption or fostering is in order if they get out of prison.

Pat, I agree with this, but I think maybe the first two steps should be reversed. That way, we save the cost of the drugs.

The drugs are confiscated from dealers in quantity and often burned.

They could be used for no additional cost to eliminate such criminals.

Death by fire is cruel torture, in contrast to a warm, gentle OD on smack.

I don't favor cruelty...just efficient elimination of wastes.
