View Full Version : Double standard in warnings and reports

Look, I realize that my opinions draw a lot of ire from online liberals (which I actually enjoy!), but that's no reason for what's supposed to be an unbiased board to have a backlash.

It doesn't bother me to get negative reps from the libs. It doesn't even bother me that some mods enjoy slapping warning points on me at the sign of even an indirect insult to an unnamed group of people. I just pull up my big-boy pants and move on. But what REALLY frosts me is when I report a blatant ad hominem attack and get no response. If that's not a double standard I don't know what is.

Clearly there are different classes of citizens on this board, and that's decidedly anti-American. I'm very disappointed in the way rules are being enforced around here.

I can't comment on your reports as I don't believe I've seen them. But I know that a problem sometimes is actually getting people to report the posts, as multiple people have told me that's not their style. So it's possibly that what's perceived as a double standard is simply that mods aren't being alerted to issues.

warning points suck..
IMO
people that report posts for being called a name
suck even more

How is reporting anything, (less then a death threat), of typed letters
from someone that you will never see, "pulling your big boy pants up"?
Just askin..
I do agree it should be equal on both sides..
I just most likely disagree with everyone here on this point system / warning crap all together.
seems like most of ya all like this warning point stuff..
I mean in 2 days now.. seems like half the major posters already have them

Cronic, how has the changes affected the civility and content of posts over the past few days?

Also, do you think they have played a role in the increase in both members and posts that we've had since the rule changes have been instituted?

I don't like the extra work, but from what I can tell the results suggest its worth it.

warning points suck..
IMO

But when they don't we go back to the way it was before, with members leaving and less and less posts being made.

I'm not saying this to argue, but to see if others disagree with my conclusions.

Cronic, how has the changes affected the civility and content of posts over the past few days?

It hasn't much..yet... but its only been a couple days..I have seen one member already say that they will be posting less and I think as more people get warnings and the points get higher and higher.. thats gonna possibly silence the board alittle.
Just my opinion tho.. doesn't matter much what I think
just answering best I know to the question

Also, do you think they have played a role in the increase in both members and posts that we've had since the rule changes have been instituted?

To early to judge yet I think.. beings its only been 2 days.. my answer would be no... more over the member increase and certainly the posting increase would be due to all the new topics and threads started.. the rule changes have not been the cause of more members and more posts..
My post count has went up drastically in the last 2 days also..but its not because I love being here now because I'm unable to show my political stance and I now belong to a board that has a warning points system in place so no one will yell at me or call me a bad word

I don't like the extra work, but from what I can tell the results suggest its worth it.

I wouldn't either.. considering its not a paying job. I would constantly be asking myself why and telling myself.. wow.. this is sad I have to do this at an adult forum...as far as it being worth it.. I agree.. it is worth it if it makes one feel good about it....but again.. I think its to early to consider this new warning point system a success

But when they don't we go back to the way it was before, with members leaving and less and less posts being made.

I remember hearing some people complaining about libs and con talk.. I don't remember anyone leaving.
I left for a week and came back..
If I wouldn't have came back.. within a few more weeks.. you all would have forgotten me and moved on and new members would show up.

besides labrocca.. I can't think of anyone that left.

Im not whining.. make as many rules as you want here..
But when people like AnnE gets warning points for responding to someone to much.. and one person gets a warning point for one thing and someone else don't for the same thing.. you are going to have threads like this one coulter started all the time.
That also happens when there is too many cheifs and not enough indians
Im not saying thats the case here but already I have seen since the warning points.. someone whining about having them and posting in open forum it must have been so and so staff that warned me.. and someone else stating.. no...so and so staff wouldn't do it.. he is more laid back then the others.. which already shows you all are not equal..

only 2 days in.. maybe all the staff will in time become more equal in dishing out these so-called needed warning points to us.

I hope I don't never get reported for speaking my mind here.. but if I do.. I will pull my pants up to and move on.. I see much worse in real life and if people around here get offended at a typed bad word or name from a keyboard.. Id love to see them in real life.. probably a middle finger from a passing motorist and they are ready to call the police

If you really want to believe the warning point system is why posts and new members is supposedly up.. thats fine.. but.. its really doubtful

Ugh cronic. I just noticed your siggie pic. Ick!

Despite what Anne says, she did not get warning points for responding....she knows what she got warning points for, as did the other poster involved.

Now I just want to add something about warning points.....they have always been in effect, posters just couldn't see them. There were pages and pages of posts complaining about the way things were done around here. Some of the complaints were about staff not doing anything........well, warning points being visible is one way of showing you that we are doing something. Another one of the complaints was that debates weren't civil......people were getting away with calling names, taking threads off topic......so I'm not sure what the complaints are about, since everyone discussed what they wanted.

Zo took everyone's comments into consideration, staff discussed them, and the ones that most posters said they want enforced, we are enforcing.

Of course everyone thinks their posts are "gold" and don't deserve to be moved to FP or warning points given........that's just natural.....just as all of staff is not going to view the same complaint the same way.......we're humans. Moderators names are on each warning point PM that you recieve. If you think it was in error, discuss it with the mod that gave it to you........I don't think any of us will tell you to go jump in a lake. Not to put anymore work on Zo's shoulders, but I know some aren't going to feel comfortable talking to the mod that gave them warning points........so if you think they are so unfair.........PM him and he will either discuss it, remove them or leave them.

No, she does not know what she got warning points for.

I responded to someone and I was told to stop. I responded to another post and got more points. You said I was following him around. Well, when there are only a few people on the board posting... you are right I am following that person around. Next time I will just start a thread and talk to myself in between responding to other people.

No, she does not know what she got warning points for.

Every PM that has warning points gives you a reason and the post that it was for. If you have questions on the warning, or don't understand it, then it's up to you to ask.

I responded to someone and I was told to stop. I responded to another post and got more points. You said I was following him around. Well, when there are only a few people on the board posting... you are right I am following that person around. Anne.....I'm not going to get in a pissing contest with you. You and the other poster were following each other from thread to thread......you were not discussing you were harassing each other. Both of you got warning points the first time you did it.....more warning points the second time you did it. The posts were all moved from the threads I was reading at the time to FP......

Now I find it funny that only you are complaining about not knowing what the warning points were for and getting them, but your partner in crime isn't. I'm going to have to go back and look at the thread where everyone was discussing what direction they wanted the forum to go in.........I think you were pretty vocal about this.

AnnEsthesia

If I was complaining, I would have PM'd you. However, I did not, nor do I , think I was "harassing" anyone. As I said, there were only a few people on the forum. Would be really boring to sit and talk to myself instead of responding to the person who is actually posting. But you are right, I was responding in various threads, because that was where the posting was! Do you sit and talk in the active threads, even if there is only one other person posting in them? Or do you twiddle your thumbs and wait for more people to show before you respond to anything?

And again, I could really care less about the points, so your little comment about my bitching about being warned is just funny. Sorry if you do not like me warning other people so they do not get points. You would think you would appreciate it, but I guess not.

 of all this baby bullsh1t around here..

Well I'm sick of all the grade-school bullshit around here where we call each other names and so forth. 'Baby bullshit' is perhaps adults who would like to debate politics and social issues without having to deal with immaturity and ridiculous negativity. I have often thought about leaving because of it. To quote Agent Smith of The Matrix, "I feel... infected by it"

As far as I'm concerned anyone who does stupid stuff like you just did to patrick should get 12..18..25% warning points.. if you can't keep from doing more than once every 2-3 weeks on average, what is your problem really? I mean if it were in the pictures thread and you and patrick were buddies and it was a joke, that'd be another thing.

I have no problem with the warning points I was given, it was a tit for tat exchange and I was the tat. Immature, waste of time.. i just wish the tit and the tat had been dinged. I don't see how 'n|gger' is any more offensive than 'head diaper' or whatever the arab head garment was called. I don't know if people are to set in their ways to change behavior, but if it actually happens I think the site would become more serious.

The real answer is in the statistics. Presumably there's a tool for that attached to the forum software or installed on the server.

That doesn't make me a bad person does it?.. I just look past it.. many times I laugh at it.. and when in serious debates, politics or otherwise.. it has never once hindered my debating ability and usually makes the person calling the names look even more idiotic.
Thick skin I'm finding out is something very few people around here have.

I think its silly we can't display in our profiles what our political association is but we could put it in our signatures or titles if we wanted. and all because of people actually having problems with the opposites of what they are/were politically.

You say your sick of the fighting?.. I say I'm sick of the crying.

Cronic, my opinion is that even if the comment doesn't bother you personally, by reporting it you are helping to improve the atmosphere and increase the potential for other members to debate actual issues. By leaving it it's more likely the quality of the thread will devolve, and it's more likely that the actual issues worthy of discussion will be ignored.

ok ZO.. that does make sence..

I will do my lvl best to report anything bad even if it makes me laugh rather then get mad.
Id rather keep the debate up and going when it gets hot and heavy..But sitting here thinking about it.. if someone is pissy with me and calls me something they shouldnt.. a report on them may possibly make them more mad.. which could result in more drama. wooohoooo .lol...( joking )
