Greensburg Man Charged With Raping 5-Month-Old

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- An 18-year-old Greensburg man has been charged with raping a baby who police said was left in his care.

Police said Scott Wade Smith raped his girlfriend's 5-month-old girl Friday morning at a home in the 500 block of Highland Avenue, where several people, including the infant's mother, were living.

Authorities said the infant suffered severe injuries and was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where surgery was performed.

Police said the girl was crying so hard she nearly stopped breathing.

According to police, Smith made a story about the baby choking on a crayon, but paramedics didn't find anything in her throat. So, they decided to take her to Westmoreland Hospital, which is where doctors found blood inside her diaper.

"Doctors immediately notified Greensburg police, who headed to the house with a search warrant," said Capt. George Seranko of the Greensburg Police Department.

There, police said they found a blood-soaked towel in a box in Smith's bedroom, along with four red-stained baby wipes.

The mother was in class at her high school when the alleged attack occurred, police said.

Smith was charged with five felonies, including rape of a child, causing seriously bodily injury, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and endangering the welfare of children. He is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison on $1 million bail.

Police said rape of a child with serious bodily injury under the age of 13 is punishable by life in prison, and they are asking the district attorney to push for that sentence.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday. It's unknown whether Smith has a lawyer yet.

I've argued from time to time, the capitol punishment is no different than destroying a dangerous animal. If one choses to act like a dangerous animal, they should be treated as such.

We are "Human-beings", which is two words with specific meanings.

"Human" speaks to our physical manifistation. The "animal".

"Being" implys a state of mind, and refers to our concious actions. Without this, we are just animal.

There is no state in which any crime but murder is punishable by death. It was ruled unconstitutional to give a death sentence for rape of women; it is being tried to get it accepted for rape of children.

I am against this, because it's just incentive to kill the victim.

It solves several problems.

I don't favor torture and an OD is a way we often euthanize our pets.

Eliminating a truly disgusting criminal for heinous crimes will get approval from a majority of reasonable adults.

But a cruel killing draws opposition from certain liberals.

Cremation eliminates the body, so there is no need to take up space in a cemetary.

If the family really wants to remember their "loved one" they can have a memorial and place a stone somewhere.

But most of us would rather the sicko was just flushed.

How often do we remember our bowel movements?

My brother is a Corrections Officer. He said when a creep gets put in there for a sick crime like this the guards make sure to spread why this guy is in there to the population, even in Protective Custody he can still be gotten to.

I used to know a guy who was a prison guard in Alabama and he said that same thing. That's one of the reasons he quit, his wife didn't like that things like that were going on and he often felt guilty wondering if any of those being attacked were wrongly convicted.

Louisiana is alone in the nation with its provision for executing first-time convicted rapists when the victim is a child, and only Louisiana has someone on death row for such a crime. While the other four states -- soon to be joined by Texas -- allow the death penalty for child rape, their laws require that the penalty be imposed only for a repeat offender.

That may not stand:

The U.S. Supreme Court will likely have to answer the question of whether the rape of a child warrants the death penalty under the U.S. Constitution. In 1977, the high court banned the death penalty for rape, but its ruling only mentioned adult victims, not children.

As I said, I am not for this as it encourages perps to kill their victims. There is no incentive to let them live if the penalty is the same either way, and in fact no witness = better chance of no penalty at all.
