TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - The Florida Senate wants public school students to pull up their pants. Lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches.
It won't become law unless the House of Representatives passes a companion measure.
Florida could join several southern U.S. towns and cities that have passed "saggy pants" laws aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement -- wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear.
Supporters say schools sometimes don't properly police dress codes and parents are often "under aware" of what their kids are wearing to school.
Critics say the measure is unnecessary, arguing that appearance and dress codes should be the responsibility of school districts and parents.
Despite being the butt of jokes, the bill's sponsor, Orlando Sen. Gary Siplin, a Democrat, has said the fashion statement has a back-story -- it was made popular by rap artists after first appearing among prison inmates as a signal they were looking for sex.
"All we're trying to do now is trying to inform folks that we have a fad now that does not have a very good origination," Siplin said. "We're trying to make an example in school," he added, saying it would help students get jobs and a degree.
The Florida city of Riviera Beach passed its own saggy pants law Tuesday, with a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail for repeat offenders.

I think that people who wanna be saggin should be allowed to do so, as often as they please.
Speaking for myself, it's a great big sign saying, "Don't hire me, because I'm a friggin' hoodlum".

Most of the people who wear their pants like this, don't know how it became popular.
People in prison who wear their pants like this know why they do.... its because they are someone elses prison bitch, and the boss likes easy access.
Don't believe me?!? Look it up.

The whole point of that kind of dress if to get a reaction from people. I would say it's working.

They should just make a rule requiring school uniforms. Then it won't be a problem.

The libertarian in me rules the day on this one...as long as they want to look like an ass, they can.
If looking foolish was against the law, we'd have to outsource our prison overflow to Guam.

Alotta the laws being passed aren't applied only to school dress codes. They are applied to how the hoodlums wear their pants in public.

Personally, in schools at least, this looks like a safety hazard. Like - suppose there really is a fire and students have to quickly exit. Isn't it a bit difficult to walk rapidly, let alone run, if your pants are somewhere near your thighs?

I agree with the second part of your statement.
The article is wrong. The place the rappers got the baggy clothes idea from were the Street Gang members, the actual real ones not these posers that are around today. Gang Members would wear baggy clothes because you can conceal weapons and mass amounts of drugs fairly easily.
In my job "Perception is Reality". If the guy is wearing baggy clothes when I stop him he goes in cuffs automatically. I very rarely use my cuffs, most of the people come back with no problems what so ever. Baggy clothes are different, I don't know what the hell they have. I am also a lot rougher with them as well. For instance if they make any sudden moves they go right to the ground. If they are wearing baggy clothes, a hat on crooked or have a bandanna hanging around their pocket area, arm or neck my perception is a gang member and more then likley packing, has a knife or drugs.
That strategy has paid off, most of the people with baggy clothes I have stopped have had something stupid on them like a weapon or drugs. Thank got I have not found a gun but on almost everyone I have found a knife or drugs. When I ask them what the knife is for they say defending themselves. Normally it is a box cutter or razer blade knife of some sort.

Let people wear or not wear what they want in life
The wearing or not wearing of anything really has no physical damaging significance whatsoever towards anyone in the general public.
this is just another petty, money grabbing, victimless,
controlling law against people.

Whats that called when people die from their own stupidity?
Something about the fittest....or was it about the gene pool?

Maybe gang colors should be removed from school.
This law only applies to schools.
After school they should all take off their belts....you know, to level the playing field. Cops have to run with all that equipment. Punks should have a handicap.
Well darn! That means I'll have to hitch up my britches if I ever want to visit Florida. ;) :D

I think people should be allowed to wear whatever they want in public, but I think schools or companies should be allowed to have their own dress codes. The only exception should be when someone tries to impersonate an officer of the law, doctor, or a person in the military and tries to con people.

Yes. And black punks walking around with their asses hanging out. It's a prison thing. It's all about black culture and white America's response to the unsavory aspects of it.
Its not a race thing. whites and mexicans are doing it too.
Its a statement against the establishment. Its protest. Rebellion.
Like long hair was in my school years.
In fact when I was in High School in California in the 70's....we were wearing our levis low on the hip.

That is almost impossible to do. Gang Members wear clothes of that color now. There are hundreds of thousands of different gangs each with different colors.
By colors I meant not just the scarf color.
The style they wear is also a "color".
Some wear Raiders jackets... some wear white tee shirts and baggy pants with a thin belt... some wear their pants below their butts.

I've often wondered what would happen if some of us older folks would pull our britches down around our hips and let our drawers show? Put on some real garish granny drawers and let them hang out for the world to see. I wonder if seeing our granny-clad backsides all the time would be as socially acceptable as viewing theirs!

True, but you cant start outlawing common clothing or items like Raider's Jackets. What happenes to that kid who's family has season tickets to the Raiders and is a huge fan and a perfect student, and Eagle Scout, never been arrested? Your labeling him as a gang member and there will be major law suits.

Obviously some people want the "state or fed" to specify uniforms for the people, since this freedom of choice thing and all the clashing "tastes" are just "too much for people to handle".....
How long until we goosestep and march in unison on the streets by directive?
Maybe we should all have the same haircuts?
Only one kind of music, because some is offensive.....
How sad..... Grow up people.
I dont think students who are minors should EVER be forced to wear uniforms. ( that means in my world Catholic schools are outlawed :nana: )
Dress codes should be fairly liberal... However, indecent exposure can be a distraction from academia.... so can the violence that comes from students wearing gang colors.
Gangs have very specific styles, but they can change those colors frequently for various reasons.
School dress codes should be adaptable too.

Clothing. The uniform of Hispanic gangs is standard and easily recognizable. Most gang members adopt a basic style that includes white T-shirts, thin belts, baggy pants with split cuffs, a black or blue knit cap (beanie) or a bandana tied around the forehead similar to a sweat band.
Black gang members are individualistic in their dress. Black gangs tend to identify themselves by adopting certain colors. The "Crips" identify themselves with the colors of blue or black or a combination of the two. "Blood" gangs generally use red accessories, such as caps or bandanas, to identify themselves.
While clothing alone cannot positively determine membership in a street gang, color and style serve to identify each gang. Green can either mean the gang member is declaring neutrality for the moment or is a drug dealer. Black is worn by some Hispanic gangs and Heavy Metal Anglo gangs. Other common gang colors include brown or purple.
Note: Some gangs are starting to change their clothing style by no longer wearing their colors in an effort to deceive law enforcement and conceal their gang affiliation.
Gang clothing styles can be easily detected because of the specific way gang members wear their clothing. Examples are preferences for wearing baggy or "sagging" pants or having baseball caps turned at an angle. Gang members often prefer particular brands of shoes, pants or shirts. For example, some gangs like to wear plaid shirts in either blue, brown, black or red. These shirts are worn loosely and untucked. Gang graffiti, symbols, messages or gang names can be written or embroidered on jackets, pants and baseball caps. Other identifying items include belt buckles with the gangs initials, key chains, starter jackets (team jackets), and red or blue bandannas commonly called "rags".
Excessive amounts of dark clothing or a predominance of one-color outfits, white T-shirts and levis with upturned cuffs are also indicators of possible gang involvement.
I should add this snippet to that last quote:
Jewelry. May be expensive or cheap, but the gaudy type is preferred. Examples are heavy gold rope chains, earrings and other large rings.
<snip>
Other signs that youngsters may have joined gangs include crude and elaborate tattoos, females wearing heavy eye make-up and dark lipstick, fingernails painted a certain color, certain undergarments, gang-colored shoelaces in their athletic shoes and specific hairstyles (such as shaving their heads bald, hair nets, rollers or braids).
Your local cop shop is familiar with what your local gangs are sporting.
Your school also knows. But will prolly refer you your P.D. website.

Yea but girls who are over 21 can still wear the catholic school girl outfit if they want, I wont object! :clapper:
Some of you gang information is correct and some is not accurate. There are set's around here like EWT who wear solid white. THey are about as hard as you come and are always packing. The only reason I know this is that I have popped several gang members and I make small talk with them while were waiting for the police to arrive. I ask them about the different things normally.
Heres a coincidence.... A friend of mine in OKC just sent me an email about an LA Gang member.... er, a former gang member:
DANGERS OF TRYING TO JACK A SEMI
This fine upstanding member of the infamous 18th Street LA gang decided one day
that he would try to car-jack a semi truck at gun point .
The gangster jumped up on the driver side, while the truck was in motion, and stuck
a gun in the drivers face.
The only problem was that the truck driver opened up the door and knocked the
attempted thief off. He lost his balance and fell under the wheels of the truck, at
which time the driver slammed on his brakes, resting on top of him and decided that
this was the perfect time to whip out his Fuji Disposable camera....
Didn't look real until you see the third picture..

I just don't know about the laws in California. I know here in Nevada you can use equal or reasonable force if you feel you are in danger.
I know when I make a stop and someone becomes violent I always make sure to warn them. I tell them I fear for my safety and will defend myself. I always have a witness when I make a stop, that way all my bases are covered. I have never gotten in a fight outside of work but I would still say the same thing if I did. That is one of the first things they taught me in Martial Arts.
