Pluck of the Irish: Beer Costume Stolen
By Associated Press
4:06 PM CDT, March 13, 2008

EASTPOINTE, Mich. - Police in suburban Detroit are looking for a 6-foot-tall glass of Guinness. Don't worry, it's work-related. A green, pint-glass-shaped Guinness costume has been reported stolen from an Eastpointe resident's garage.

It's valued at $3,000 and had been flown to Michigan from Ireland to be used as advertising. Eastpointe Police Lt. Leo Borowsky says it is believed to be one of only two such costumes in the U.S.

Authorities say a Detroit beer distribution company loaned out the costume for Halloween. The owner of the home where the costume had been stored found out it had been stolen after the company asked for it back.

Borowsky says to be on the lookout. There's no better time to dress up as a green pint of Guinness than on St. Patrick's Day.

I don't see why anyone would steal it, I mean what would you do with it? It's not like it doesn't stand out and you obviously cant use it or wear it, so what is the point? Crooks are so stupid.

People have always stolen stuff like costurmes--stop signs, other traffic signals, etc. In the town I lived in for 25 years, there was an intersection of High and Normal Streets. As you might imagine, that sign was stolen MANY times through the years. Prolly every one of them wound up in some college kid's room.

Street and warning signs are different, those are so generic that noone will think twice when they see that in someone's room. When your talking about a rare and large item like this costume that is a completly different thing. How can you explain that one to your friends? People like to talk and that is something easily remembered and identified.

Remember I work arresting theives all day and I have heard some great excuses but I cant think of one that would cover this. I've had people say they didn't think it was a crime to steal, thought that these items were free, homeless and hungry (they're stealing alcohol) etc. I have also seen crooks use their children as the mode like concealing the merchandise on their children or in their babies stroller or carseat under the baby etc.

May I remind you that stealing a stop sign could cause a fatal accident? Who's gonna suffer from the theft of a costume?

I didn't say I agreed with that but you can explain that one away. You can buy stop signs almost anywhere at any hardware store. They are a common item, and also you couldn't prove where they stole it from if they did as it is a common item.

Now a rare costume where there is only one or two of them in the country, now that one you can not explain how you have it. They are stealing something they cant use or display with out to many questions or linking them to stolen merchandise. Not to mention it probably has identifying marks or numbers that they can use to identify it as well.
