I found this to be interesting:

NEW YORK -- New York City police said a 28-year-old Queens man was stabbed in the stomach Friday after he came on to a lesbian in the West Village.

Police said Dwayne Buckle was in critical condition Saturday at Saint Vincent's Hospital, where he underwent surgery on his liver.

Investigators said Buckle was stabbed after he stopped a 19-year-old woman and told her she was pretty

Ok, sounds like it's all her fault right?

The Daily News reported in its Saturday editions that Buckle, who the paper described as a “DVD bootlegger in the West Village,” spat on the 4-foot-11 woman after she rebuffed him.

According to police, the woman pulled out a steak knife and stabbed Buckle.

Joining in the attack were the woman's six friends ranging in age from 18 to 31, according to police. The Daily News said they beat him with belts, and punched and kicked him.

Police arrested the women a block away on charges of attempted murder and gang assault. They were arraigned early Saturday morning.

The paper quoted one of the women as saying that “he called us [homophobic slur] and he said he was going to f-- us all.”

“He spat on us and threw a cigarette,” another of the woman told the Daily News. “This is a hate crime,” she said hours after the incident, as police led the seven suspects out of the 6th Precinct stationhouse.

According to a published report in Saturday's editions of the New York Post, relatives and friends of the women -- who are all from Newark -- said they are lesbians and denied the women attacked Buckle. The Daily News referred to the women as “a gang of petite but ornery lesbians."

I think this really hinges on how the "I'm going to fuck you all" comment was interpreted. Was it self defense (did they think they were in danger of rape) or was it purely an overreaction? The guys scum either way, but was the knife called for?

Lets see, 7 people.. one with a knife versus one guy. Thats not self defense, the knife was uncalled for. I wouldn't be so quick to believe what they say either, all we know for certain right now is that one woman stabbed a man and then 6 of her friends beat him. Calling someone a lesbian doesn't give someone the right to stab the him. I don't see much of a crime on his part, maybe they could give him a slap on the wrist for spitting on her lol. Shes going away for a very long time if shes convicted of attemted murder and thats fine with me, I don't want crazy people like her walking the streets.

Why was she carrying a knife in the first place? If he said that to all 7 of them, they couldn't have really been seriously threatened and the knife should never have gotten involved. One guy can't take 7 people.. i'm sorry.

I agree with bobbylien, 7v1 is not self-defense... its assault... and it doesnt say there was any attempt of rape.. or even a sign that he was going to hurt them. If he just shouted abuse... at the very most a slap would have sufficed.. but then again.. that could have spurred him to attack.

It was pretty stupid to stab him....

I'm also curious if there are any other witnesses. The attackers can hardly be credible witnesses.

If the women thought he was going to do something, and if he made that statement gave them reason to think that, then it was self defense gone overboard, as I assume he was immobilized before the group beating.

As a new yorker...a lot of shit talk happens. And I wouldn't believe the spitting until it was proven. The chicks should get some time for this.

Guilty.

Charge them all with 2nd degree or aggrivated assault.

7 to 1 is a no brainer. Charge them all with assault and attempted murder. All that from name calling? Sheesh. If they had just kicked his a$$ it would have been over with, and no one would have heard a word about it (what guy is gonna report having his butt kicked by a bunch of women?):D

Well, spitting on someone and then telling them you're going to fuck them, after being rejected by them, seems like a threat to me, not just an insult.

People say things... 9 times out of 10.. they dont act upon their words..

The women overreacted.. and with 7 of them... even if he did try it on.. they would have beaten him back.. THEN it would have been self-defense.

But no action was made upon his words... yet they lashed out..

Reading this debate, I am strongly reminded of the Virutes Project site and all the information there about dealing with bullying.** It is my opinion the man was probably bullying and the girls figured they could out bully the bully.**I don't think anyone would like my opinion about what to do about this.**It reminds me of a dog fight more than acceptable social behavior and I don't think there were any inoccent people.**Put them all jail cells, separate but connected, and let them work out their problem with each other the best they can.**None get released until they resolve the problem they share.**

My opinion on this one is the same as my opinion about making racial or ethnic slurs. When we are not respectful and do not protect the dignity of others, there is trouble. This is just of the logic of the morality. Punishing people and nelgeting to do anything about the cause of the problem, will not correct the problem. Punishment here can only repress the expression of a problem that will probably become more intense.

An idealist you surely are. The man was stabbed! He could have been killed. Sorry but there needs to be punishment for that. I guess you don't believe in the penal system.

If thats how everyone crime was dealt with.. then the population of America would be much less...
