College Junior Breakfasts With Chelsea Clinton
21-Year-Old Wisconsin Super Delegate Gets Face Time With Former First Daughter
Chelsea Clinton speaks to supporters Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 after a campaign event for her mother, Democratic presidential hopeful, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. (Joel Page/AP Photo) By KAREN TRAVERS
Feb. 11, 2008

Share Jason Rae is a typical junior in college.

He spends several hours a day in class at Marquette University in Wisconsin where he is majoring in history and political science. He is closely following the Marquette basketball team and has the Golden Eagles' schedule memorized.

But not many 21-year-olds start their Monday with a personal breakfast with Chelsea Clinton, as Rae did this morning at the student union at the nearby University of Milwaukee.

Rae got the one-on-one treatment from the former — and possibly future — first daughter because he is a Democratic National Committee member from Wisconsin and thus a "super delegate," one of the 796 free agents who can back any candidate in the race for the Democratic nomination.

Never Voted Before
Rae may be a typical college junior but he is certainly not the typical DNC super delegate.

He is only 21 years old — he has never voted in a presidential election because he turned 18 after Election Day in 2004.

Since the race between New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is so tight, Rae has become a power broker of sorts, as both campaigns push hard to lock down the support of super delegates.

Rae said he and Chelsea Clinton talked about electability and mobilizing young people to get involved in politics. He said she spoke about what states her mother can carry in the general election and what demographics favor her candidacy. The two talked about how the campaign's operations were going in the states and what she is seeing on the ground.

Obama or Clinton: Will Party Elite or Voters Decide? The breakfast lasted about 30 minutes. Rae said he had to hustle back to campus and get to his afternoon classes.

Rae was elected as a DNC member at the Wisconsin state party convention in June 2004. He was 17 years old at the time but there are no party rules that say a DNC member has to be of voting age. Rae ran against and defeated the president of the state firefighters' union and a state legislator.

Rae has been called on his cell phone by former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright who tried to woo him to the Clinton side and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, who was pushing for Rae to endorse Obama.

Lets see, I have a 21 year old superdelegate. I can send a 60 year old, who could be his grandpa, to convince him or I could send a mid 20 year old to convince him.

In your mind you apparently go with grandpa.

My guess is that she just lays there and lets it happen. Kind of like what Hillary does when Bill needs a little and his female staffers aren't available.

I think this is a sign of the desperate situation that Hillary is under. It seems that the ordinary people seem to be going towards Obama and Hillary is trying to court the super delegates into voting for her now. It is easier to go after the democratic "elite" than to convince the rank and file ordinary Americans. Personally, I think the idea of having super delegates shows a distrust for the will of the rank and file democrats. Those select few seems to have more of a voice than others on the left. Perhaps the delegates that we seen to the conventions will vote to have the vote of the super delegate tossed out.

I think the attacks by our right wing posters on Miss Clinton for doing this go so far over the top that it's absolutely disgusting. I'm gonna avoid the temptation to make some suggestions about their mothers, but I just wish I could quit thinking about what I'd like to say.

Today on MSNBC, I saw Chelsea addressing a group in WI about Hillary's health care plan. They cut away after about five minutes, but I was VERY impressed with what she said and how she said it. For content, I'd give her an A+, but only an A- for delivery: she isn't as accomplished a public speaker as her parents, but I wonder how good they were in their 20s.

For what it's worth, I'm strongly for Obama, but Hillary's health care plan has some strengths that I wish were in Obama's plan.

Personally, I don't give a shit what she does. She could fuck the dude on camera, for all I care. My point, is that they shouldn't get their thongs in a knot over a single comment from the media, then send their daughter to flirt with a 21 y/o superdelegate, over breakfast. If they can't take the heat, they should get out of the kitchen.

I agree, Buck.

I think the level of decorum around here has been tanking lately.

And I know well enough that Scorpion has some significant ability to debate. He simply chooses to degrade the discussion.

Hard to figger some people...

Saying crude things about the daughter of a candidate for president is unworthy. Why not just stay with the issue that we have an influential member of the candidate's family doing something personal with a delegate?

Lily, the point is that apdst just said that because he could. He knows he has no basis for it, so it's essentially a lie. If Harry Truman were around, and Chelsea were his daughter, he'd whack apdst upside the head with a two by four. And he'd deserve it.

It's ok Buck.. Take a few days if you need to.. or do like me.. Laugh at their inabilities to debate logically and without insults. I have only been here a few weeks and I'm loving the people I debate against..I'm glad I found this place. Makes me feel like a professor teaching in a kindergarten class.

Chelsea doesn't deserve the insulting remarks but if she knew about them.. she would also know the source in which they came and then have to consider the source's level of intelligence, thus making her realize feelling bad about them would be a waste of time.

All this plays right into the Clintons hands.
They play the victim better than any political family in America.
For them to be able to paint Chelsea as the dainty flower being attacked by the vast right wing hate mongers puts a big smile on their face.
Look for them to trot these examples out right before next Tues primaries.
You can bet on it.

However:
Discussing this issue in these terms really has no redeeming value.

Y'know, it's amusing how right-wingers accuse us lefties of being whiners, when they're always the ones complaining, isn't it? Maybe someone oughtta post a dictionary definition of whining, just so people would understand that most of the whining, pissing & moaning, and bitching comes from our brethren who've fallen off the road on the right side. :madlaugh:

The first aspect I wish to comment on here was her mother's tacit agreement that her staff said FNC was being "fair and balanced" with this issue as opposed to MSNBC. I thought this interesting in light of some other opinions around here on FNC.

http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2008/02/12/hillary-suggests-fox-news-fairer-her-msnbc

Now to the real meat of this. The Hillary express is planning to use the Super Delegates to trump Ombama at the Convention this summer if they lose the popular vote in the primary. I saw a super delegate interviewed in PA, he was the mayor of some town there. He looked right into the camera and said he didn't care if Obama won the popular vote in PA or not, he was casting his vote at the convention for Hillary, no if, ands, or buts.

It is this support that the Clintons are beginning to whip up with the party regulars because they know if they lose the popular vote across this land, they can steal the nomination in the convention process. I don't doubt them for one nano second. They will fight with all of their dirty tricks.:fight:

Imagine the rancor, the bitterness, and party implosion if the Clintons pull it off this summer in this manner. The Democratic party will literally implode and I wouldn't be surprised to see it split into to factions, the Old Liberal camp who made their bones in the Hubert Humphrey Liberalism of the 60's, and the New Liberal Left camp supported by Moveon.org and George Soros.

In any event, it will be a very interesting Democratic National Convention if Hillary and Obama go into the convention with Obama having the lead in the popular vote of the primary. Can't wait.

you can follow the delegate commitment race at this link.

Given the rate at which Obama is accumulating delegates, I doubt that the super delegates will be able to exercise much power at the convention..

I think the days are gone when a small cabal could control the actions of either the democrats or republicans. That may be Bush's greatest accomplishment.
