The massacre in Colorado and gun control

It's inevitable, isn't it? It's inevitable that the recent tragedy in Colorado will renew the debate over gun control. It is inevitable that we will hear the same old arguments from the NRA and the same old arguments from gun control advocates. I recall another mass killing in Colorado followed by debates and talk. Here we are again.
Although I'm not really interested in discussing the merits of gun control versus the constitutional right to bear arms, since we all know the arguments inside and out, I will offer up this bit of fodder. In my opinion, one of the arguments against gun control should be buried with the victims of this massacre. The argument goes like this: "If you ban certain weapons, then only criminals will have those weapons". That argument is meaningless and nonsensical in regard to the type of crazy lunatic that would massacre people in a theater. Whether or not the guy was a criminal before he did this is completely irrelevant, because one way or another he is insane. Furthermore, according to the press conference all of his weapons and equipment were purchased legally.
For the sake of my own sanity, I just have to believe that people who do this type of stuff are insane. (Not that I hope this suspect is found insane as a defense; I rather hope he is not.) And I suppose there isn't really any good way to keep weapons out of the hands of insane people. But shouldn't we make some effort? I just don't think we can shrug off the occasional rampage of a lunatic gunman as the price we pay for a sacrosanct 2nd Amendment.

What effort do you propose?

^ I honestly don't know. Maybe someone wiser than myself can put forth a few ideas.

Assault rifles with 100 .223 rounds in a drum magazine have no purpose other than inflicting as much carnage to as many other humans as fast as possible. There is no reason to sell or buy them to/by the general public.

What limit do you want? Do you know anything at all about how gun laws developed in other countries?
Mark
I want an end to cowardice. I don't care what other countries have done - that is irrelevant to our having massacres here. I want us doing here what should have been done here.

If this numb nuts had any idea about what the assault weapons ban actually banned, you would be laughing at him, not agreeing with him.

What about the actual proposal from Rosie, of banning weapons with 100 bullet drums?
I'm not sure how difficult creating such a drum is, and therefore whether such a ban would be terribly effective for these scenarios. But it certainly makes more sense to me than a blanket gun ban.

If only we had the common sense to make Colorado as safe as Chicago and D.C.
